Listening to the guest lecturers was very interesting. Although I had already had at least one class with each of them, I learned something new about them that day. For instance, Mike Machado specializes in Systems Administration. Granted, I knew he was very good at UNIX, I was not aware of this. He also maintains the ITCD web page.
Sathya Narayanan wrote his dissertation on wireless networks. He worked at the Princeton Lab for Panasonic. He also taught at the New Jersey Institute of Technology. He explained that a four year college degree is about a career, and about opening yourself to a job market with advanced skills. He described that in order to get a good career, you must have a foundation -- fundamental concepts, as well as details and technological information on your area, as well as the ability to communicate your ideas and research.
Dr. YoungJoon Byun received his Bachelors Degree in Computer Engineering and his Masters in Computer Science. He explained that the current industry trend points to computers. (Many top 10 jobs are computer oriented). He described how TMAC is about art and computers. (Visual Design, that is). Additionally he explained while many jobs are being out-sourced, the straight forward jobs, the jobs that are the core jobs and require core skills remain in the states.
Conclusively, I had chosen a career in game programming quite some time back. However, I think being a Systems Admin. would be interesting. At my current job, I do sort of Systems Administration and I enjoy it. But ultimately, I would really like to get back into coding and find a career path that integrates coding with games. I'd be really interested in speaking with professionals in that field to gain a better perspective on programming for game studios. It is my opinion that the Software Development pathway would be the most appropriate for what I am looking for.
